NY BROOKHAVEN — Brookhaven Town Board closes three budget hearings and schedules final votes for November 19. Commissioner of Finance Tamara Branson-Werner presented a 2021 preliminary operating budget with general fund property tax increases of $2.34 million, resulting in an $8.93 annual increase for typical homeowners, plus a one-dollar-per-day refuse and garbage tax increase. The board authorized a three percent contract increase for ambulance districts as pandemic responders.

The 2021-2025 capital budget adds $40.6 million in new public improvement projects, down from $43.8 million the prior year. The town navigated competing pressures: $4 million in employee retention during COVID-19 workforce reductions, $1.5 million in pandemic contractual costs, $14 million in Hurricane Isaias emergency cleanup, and ongoing Superstorm Sandy recovery.
