Town Board approves moratorium on data centers after extended public hearing

NY BROOKHAVEN — Brookhaven's Town Board unanimously approved a new moratorium on data center development after an extended public hearing drew more than 60 resident speakers voicing concerns about the projects. Town Supervisor Daniel J. Panico and Councilmembers Jonathan Kornreich, Neil Manzella, Michael A.
Loguercio Jr., Neil J. Foley, and Karen Dunne Kesnig voted to adopt Introductory Local Law Number 11 of 2026, establishing the restriction subject to Suffolk County planning approval. In other action, the board approved a $2.105 million bond issuance for Sewer District No. 2 improvements and authorized transfer of land to Habitat for Humanity of Long Island for affordable housing development in Bellport.
The meeting extended past midnight to accommodate all public comments on the data center restrictions.
