Brookhaven and Port Jefferson weigh annexation bid amid public division

NY BROOKHAVEN — Brookhaven Town Board declares Vision Zero traffic safety policy and approves multiple property acquisitions. The board unanimously adopted the Vision Zero Policy declaration alongside authorizations to acquire land for environmental preservation, drainage, and open space protection across the town. In separate action, Brookhaven and Port Jefferson held a joint public hearing on an annexation petition affecting town territory; approximately 26 residents addressed the board both in support of and in opposition to the proposal, and the hearing closed with a written comment period open through March 14.
Applicant Jim Tsunis drew support from multiple residents while also drawing opposition from County Legislator Steve Englebright. The Town Board also approved capital professional service requisitions exceeding 35,000 dollars for sewage treatment plant operations and transfer station rehabilitation, and accepted a state grant for the Mastic Beach Zoning Code project.
